My artistic practice has evolved from using text and staging theatre in alternative spaces to site-specific and community-based projects centered on walking, site-specificity, and place. As an immigrant myself in Tokyo, I’m interested in how long-term foreign residents from Southeast Asia relate to urban environments, and how walking becomes a method of translation and finding belonging between self and city.

Flow and Float

Walking the hidden rivers of Tokyo

This project explores how walking the route of an Edo–era river, now buried beneath the city as an ankyo (covered waterway) between Sendagaya Station and Shibuya, can open new ways of perceiving a neighbourhood we thought we already knew. Nuttamon conducted fieldwork through walking and walking interviews with six participants: four artists working across music, sculpture, and visual art, and two architects, drawn from Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, and Cambodia. The conversations that emerged wove together personal experience in Tokyo with shared observations of the surrounding space.

The project is developing into a zine that is intended to serve readers as a starting point, a companion, and a practical tool for exploring the route at their own pace.

Bio

Nuttamon Pramsumran

b. 1993, Samut Sakhon, Thailand

Born and raised in Samut Sakhon, near Bangkok, Thailand, Nuttamon now resides in Tokyo. She holds a B.A. in Dramatic Arts from Chulalongkorn University (2016) and an M.F.A. in Art Theory from Silpakorn University (2019). A firm believer in the power of words and dialogue in art, Nuttamon writes dialogue-driven short stories and plays that explore themes of feminism, capitalism, and memory. She co-founded Circle Theatre Bangkok in 2018, and is actively experimenting with new possibilities within the scope of text-based and interdisciplinary performance. She was invited to TPAM 2020 (Yokohama, Japan) and joined the HEKTOMERON project (Craiova, Romania) in 2021 as presenter for Thailand.

Her works include the short story collection “Abstract Bar” (P.S. Publishing, 2016), “La Maladie de l’Amour: Detoxification of a Heart” (World Stage Design Festival, Taipei, Taiwan, 2017), “Make Love, Not War” (Performative Art Festival #7, BACC, 2018), and “OK LAND,” which won Best Ensemble from Bangkok Theatre Festival 2020 and was selected for the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2022. Outside the art space, she joined Loei Art Fes / LFAF4 in 2021 to reimagine the Thai language textbook with a local youth group, and collaborated on the Parallel Normalities Project (2021–2023) in Dansai District, Loei Province, Thailand, and Gotemba City, Shizuoka, Japan.

As part of her Master’s research at Keio University, she is currently exploring Tokyo’s covered waterways, known as 暗渟 (ankyo), and their implications for urban development and migration. Her current research interests include migration, ancestry, language, and walking as a method of inquiry.
